19th Century Vienna Silver And Enamel Clock
Lyre-shaped clock with silver strings, eagle-headed arms, and an enameled dial on the body. A silver sculpture of Bacchus supports the lyre and dial. The clock rests on a polylobed base. Fine enameled ornamentation decorates this clock. Medallions representing the muses of Poetry and Music against a grotesque background adorn the upper part of the clock. The base features figures of the muses of Theater and Eloquence. Viennese work from the second half of the 19th century.

This clock is characteristic of the historical style that developed in Vienna during the second half of the 19th century. Interest in objects from the 16th and 17th centuries is growing. Thus, many enameled pieces set in lapis, rock crystal, or silver appeared. These pieces were strongly influenced by the Renaissance and the taste for cabinets of curiosities or chambers of wonders in vogue in the 16th and 17th centuries. These pieces were presented at international exhibitions where Viennese artists competed with those of the past.
