Vojtěch Antonín Hynais (December 14, 1854 Vienna – August 22, 1925 Prague – Podolí) was a Czech painter and the author of the current curtain of the National Theatre (1883).

At the age of 16, he began his studies at the Vienna Academy, first with professors Karl Wurzinger and August Eisenmenger. When professor Anselm Feuerbach returned from Rome in 1874, Hynais was transferred to his classical painting studio. Feuerbach invited him to work on the new building of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and arranged for Hynais to receive a Roman scholarship.[4] In Rome and Venice he studied and copied the works of the old masters (Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Raffaello Santi)[5] and at the same time gained the favour of the Bishop of Zagreb Josip Juraj Strossmayer, who commissioned two paintings from him. In 1873, at the World's Fair in Vienna, Hynais met other artists of the future generation of the National Theatre and discovered works of French academic classicism there. He went to Paris in 1878 with a recommendation for the painter Jaroslav Čermák, but found him already dying. He turned to the then prominent painter Paul Baudry, who recommended him to the Paris Academy. From 1878 he studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[6][4] In Paris he was in constant contact with his compatriots (Václav Brožík, Luděk Marold, Václav Sochor, Antonín Chittussi) and helped scholarship holders Augustin Němejc and František Bílek. In 1879 he exhibited for the first time in Prague at the exhibition Umělecká beseda.[4] Hynais married in Paris in 1883 the model Augusta Vorinová, with whom he already had two children, a son Jiří and a daughter Anna (also a painter).[3] To support his family, he not only painted, but also worked as a graphic designer (posters) and collaborated with the Sèvres porcelain factory. He received an important order for a series of glasses for the Hoftheater in Vienna.
