Rare Icon Of The Crucifixion, Russia 19th, Palekh School / Christ Jesus Orthodox Cross
Splendid and rare icon of the Crucifixion of Christ dating from the middle of the 19th century -- circa 1840/1860.
Its style, its great finesse and its palette allow it to be attributed to the famous iconographic school of Palekh, located in the region of the Golden Ring to the north-east of Moscow. For centuries, this region was a center of art and spirituality where some of the greatest iconographers of their time worked. Their masterpieces enriched the collections of the imperial court of the Romanovs, the great aristocracy and the high clergy. They are today preserved in the greatest Russian and international museums.
This work is delicately painted in tempera in pastel tones on an off-white background. The halos and the clothes of the saints are also very richly enhanced with gold.
Exceptional state of conservation without particular wear to the gilding and the pictorial layer. Very beautiful patina. Some small cracks and wear from time.
