Slit gong drum called "garamut" collected in the Middle Sepik area in Papua New Guinea. Slit drums like this one are mainly used to punctuate traditional ceremonies or "singsings". Entirely engraved and representing a crocodile, a totemic animal feared and venerated throughout the Sepik River Valley. Particularly decorative and very finely executed specimen.
