Studded Leather Coach Trunk Late 17th-early 18th Century
Beautiful wooden carriage trunk covered with leather and decorated with nails, 18th century period. Slightly domed lid, opening on wrought iron hinges and a grip ring on the front. Side panels with drooping handles probably later. Elegant abundant decoration on the front of a central basket from which emerge large round flowers, others in the shape of a heart in the corners as well as foliage. The decoration made of a multitude of brass or iron nails themselves in the shape of flowers (called daisy nails, of great finesse, they are today almost impossible to find). Bronze lock entry with face decoration, lock disappeared. Wear of the leather quite logical and acceptable, in particular on the sides and the top. Rear interior covered with red velvet and decorated with shelves of various shapes which served as a bar for bottles and glasses. Rear support in black lacquered wood with 6 baluster feet connected by spacers. Dimensions of the support: 110 cm X 55 cm; height: 39 cm Dimensions of the trunk: 107 cm X 53 cm; height: from 51 cm to 54 cm. These trunks are the ancestors of our car luggage trunk, very often mistreated, they were intended for rich travelers to transport personal belongings from one castle to another ... The often floral decoration, sometimes attested to the notoriety of its owner, by symbols, crests, initials etc. A similar trunk, having belonged to Madame de Pompadour, was presented at auction in Versailles, I let you read about it here
