André Margat trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and at the Arts-Déco. After being secretary/editor and illustrator of the magazine "Poésie" from 1920 to 1939, he joined the "Twelve French Animal Sculptors" with François Pompon, Paul Jouve and Marcel Lemar. From 1967 to 1977, he was a member of the board of directors of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts and president of the Decorative Arts section. In 1988 he won the Édouard-Marcel Sandoz prize at the Salon national des Artistes Animaliers.
