Flying Mercury - End Of The 18th Century - After Giambologna - Bronze
Artist: D'après Giambologna
Beautiful bronze proof with brown patina from the end of the 18th century after Giambologna's Flying Mercury. The bronze mounted with keys rests on a very pretty old marble base. Circa 1790.
Height with the base: 69 cm
Height of the bronze: 53 cm
As is.
Mercury is the most famous statue of John of Bologna. At least four versions are known, kept in Florence, Vienna, Dresden and Paris. Originally, it was commissioned by Pope Pius IV to decorate the cortile of the University of Bologna: the god Mercury points to the sky to indicate the divine origin of knowledge. This bronze figure is particularly convincing by its dynamic momentum.
