A Chinese Bronze Figure Of Liu Hai Late Ming

A well-modeled bronze figure of Liu Hai. The young Immortal stands with long flowing sleeves and his right foot resting on a double gourd from which issues a winding trail of smoke. He dangles a silver thread in front of his three-legged toad which he holds in his left hand. A hole above his back for incense. Chinese Late Ming 17th Century.

Condition; excellent, good patina.

Liu Hai is a Taoist immortal who kept a three-legged toad as a companion. The toad often ran away, but returned whenever Liu brandished a silver chain. Thus Liu and his toad became a symbol of wealth.
