China, 19th Century
A large 19th-century quadrangular baluster vase made of porcelain and enamels, decorated in the Wu Shuang Pu style. Each side of the vase features a famous figure from Chinese history, each accompanied by a poem identifying them. The depicted figures include Empress Wu Zetian (624-705), Chancellor Di Renjie (630-700), Chinese warrior Sun Ce (175-200), and the Confucian scholar Fu Sheng (268-178 BC).
The shoulders of the vase are adorned with two Taotie masks holding fixed rings.
In very good condition, with no cracks or missing parts. There are some natural asperities due to the firing process and manufacturing technique. The vase was pierced at its base and converted into a lamp in the 1960s.
