Portrait Of A Nobleman In Armour With The Battle Of Vienna In The Background. 2nd Half XVIIth
Interesting self-celebratory portrait painting from the second half of the 17th century, depicting a nobleman, it is assumed to be Silvestro Stazzone Marchese di Bonfornello, (news taken from the book on Sicilian nobility) who participated in the defense of Vienna from the siege of the Turks in 1683, therefore the painting would prove a historically proven fact.
The nobleman, on his return to Sicily, near the city of Enna, wanted to be portrayed in armor and in the background the memory of his feat, in fact, we see that the character on horseback who is attacking the Turk is the same depicted in life-size.
The painting would therefore have been executed in Sicily during the last quarter of the seventeenth century.
The dimensions of the painting: 198cm high by 113cm long.
The painting is in good condition, probably relined between the 70s and 80s.
