Jingasa - Period Meiji (1868-1912)

The Jingasa is a lightweight Japanese helmet, widely used in the Edo period as a war hat. It is much nicer and lighter to wear than a Kabuto. Samurai wore jingasa in everyday life, as an indicator of their social status. It was also worn by infantrymen (ashigaru). They are usually made of different materials such as iron, copper, wood, paper, bamboo or leather.

This one, in particular, is made of lacquered wood with family crests and metal inlays.
