Crucifix Table Clock, Movement Signed By Allodi In Parma
This rare and precious clock with calvary is a refined example of art and religious devotion. The base of the clock, hexagonal in shape, is made of ebonized wood, with six faces featuring small openings designed to showcase the details of the internal movement.
Above the base, two gilded bronze figures represent the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. Their postures and details are finely crafted, evoking the sacred art of previous centuries.
The focal point of the calvary is the central cross, also in gilded bronze, with Christ crucified. The cross is rich in details and religious symbolism, with an inscription "INRI" placed above Christ's head. At the top of the cross is a globe showing the time zone at six hours, while at the base there is a twelve-hour white enamel dial.
The clock's movement, signed by Ilario Allodi of Parma, follows a French setup. It is equipped with two barrels, a cylinder escapement, and a striking mechanism that marks the hours and half-hours.
In the Dictionary of Italian Watchmakers, written by Enrico Morpurgo, Ilario Allodi is mentioned as having built around 1800 in Parma a "Calvary" type clock with a cylinder escapement. Allodi also made a horizontal clock with a cross beside it.
