Object description :

"Italian Left Hand Dagger, Wheellock Key Blade, 17th"
This left hand dagger is very particular because of the shape of its blade, which is of the type that we find mainly on so-called "sail -guard" daggers, mainly Spanish, but also in Northern Italy,  because trade between Spain and Italy were in fact common from the 15th to the 17th centuries
BLADE: After a first part which could be called a thick ricasso, the sides of which are decorated by guilloché technic , the blade has a cutting edge which goes all the way to the tip, and a counter edge on the 10.5 cm near the tip. The non-edged part of the back is richly decorated, again using the guilloché technique.
At the level of the ricasso, we note two square holes which are probably intended to serve as a winding key for a wheel lock weapon.
Length of the blade = 23 cm, width at the ricasso = 2.2 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 6 mm
GUARD: it is made of iron, with upset quillons, which represent vegetal volutes. The center of the guard features the face of a bearded man.
POMMEL : it is made of iron, in the shape of a bulb, with a chiseled decoration of flowers and plants. The pommel is topped with a small button to which the tang of the blade is riveted.
GRIP : it is made of chiseled iron, decorated with a flower motif.

The whole dagger is very homogeneous, and absolutely no part is loose.
Interesting object due to its unusual blade.
