Alsatian of origin, he and his twin brother first designed textile models. Subsequently, he went to Paris where he became a student of Léon Bonnat and Ernest Hébert. Close friend of Jean-Jacques Henner, they painted each other's portraits. He participated in the Salon from 1868 where in 1881 he won a medal. In 1866, he was seduced by the island of Capri; he will go there regularly and will be a source of inspiration. His work can be found in several national museums.
