Six-seat suite of the "Lia" model, including four chairs and two armchairs, designed by Roberto BARBIERI for ZANOTTA.
Each seat has a lightweight four-legged structure made of aluminium alloy, on which a seat and backrest fully upholstered in red leather are placed. The slightly curved backrest, extends without visual rupture towards the seat and draws a soft shell with particularly clean lines.
The two armchairs have the same construction, complemented by two thin armrests also trimmed and sheathed in red leather.
The feet, very thin and slightly flared, are left visible and establish a contrast between the fineness of the metal structure and the flexibility of the leather.
Analysis and comment:
Italian designer and architect, Roberto BARBIERI develops a work characterized by a search for balance between geometric rigor, structural lightness and comfort. His collaboration with ZANOTTA, one of the major houses of Italian design in the second half of the 20th century, gave rise to several creations in which the apparent simplicity of form conceals a particularly precise study of construction.
Created at the end of the 1990s, Lia fully belongs to this approach. Roberto BARBIERI here reduces the chair to a few essential elements: four extremely thin legs, a seat and a back whose contours seem drawn in a single movement.
This formal economy gives the model a particularly light silhouette.
Construction directly participates in this impression. The thinness of the legs visually frees up the volume of the seat and almost makes the supporting structure disappear. This metallic rigor is matched by the flexibility of the leather upholstery, which envelops the backrest and seat and softens the geometry of the whole.
Armchairs develop the same principle with remarkable continuity: armrests, thin and slightly raised, naturally extend the lines of the seat without weighing down the silhouette.
The red leather gives this set a particularly strong decorative presence.
Its clear colour highlights the contours of the seats and contrasts with the metallic appearance of the bases. Gathered around a table, the six seats thus form a homogeneous whole while allowing the alternation between the four chairs and the two armchairs traditionally placed at the ends.
This combination of four chairs and two armchairs in the same finish is also a real advantage for the whole: it allows to keep intact the coherence of the model and its upholstery, rather than presenting isolated seats.
