Copper And Rock Crystal Shrine From Saint Maurice - 15th Century
Extremely rare Hunting Reliquary receiving several relics of Sancté Mauricij, including two Ex-ossibus relics and hair as well as a small rolled parchment presenting a prayer evoking an oration of Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), which was very popular in Fifteenth century. Note that the speech bubble has a beautiful initial. Our hunting-shaped monstrance is made of copper leaves. It is crowned with a cross piercing a ball of rock crystal. The four corners of the chapel are also covered with a rock crystal bead.
The whole is worked with small, delicately hammered insertions drawing various motifs, notably the monogram of Christ and the M Marian. Access to the relics is provided laterally through a small door opening using a drop-down hinge.
A French work from the 15th century.
Dimensions of 26.5 cm high by 11 cm.
Beautiful condition for this exceptional piece.
