"Beautiful Bas Relief Panel From The Beginning Of The 17th Century: Saint Joseph With The Flowered Stick "
Rare Saint Joseph With The Flowered Stick, Bas Relief In Walnut From The 17th Century.Rare and very beautiful representation in low relief of Saint Joseph with a flowered staff, in an architectural arcade.
it would probably be a beautiful altarpiece element made in walnut, a school of Burgundy or Flanders from the 17th century.
this panel is superb and the patina of the walnut is wonderfully preserved.
the grain of the walnut is remarkable and gives the sculpture a finesse and velvety feel that photos cannot reproduce.
if you look at the panel sideways on the left,
Joseph's face appears almost in full.
the stick is almost detached from the support, the drape is sublime.
look closely at the face, as well as the many details, the sculpting work is remarquable.
the panel is made of two thick original walnut planks. Notice at the top right an original square piece corresponding to a knot in the walnut which had popped during carving.
a wonderful Saint Joseph, early in his time.
