Porcelain statue representing Bodhidharma (Japanese: Bodai Daruma), that is to say the legendary patriarch of Zen Buddhism who lived in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Bodhidharma left his native India for China as a wandering monk, where he notably met Emperor Wu Di in the city of Nanking and became famous for his nine-year meditation in a cave near Shaolin, Henan province. The statue is hand-painted, the monk has a characteristic long beard and a penetrating gaze, and he is dressed in a simple orange robe.
