Beautiful and elegant "Portrait of a Gentleman", oil on oak panel, attributed to Nicolas Maes, born in Dordrecht in January 1634 and died in Amsterdam on December 24, 1693. Dutch painter known for these intimate genre scenes and his portraits . Dutch school, 17th century. Dimensions: Frame: h.38.5 cm x l.33.5 cm. Wood: h.25 cm x l.20 cm. Original oak frame from the 17th century. Private collection. In very good shape. History: Nicolas Maes was in Amsterdam, between 1648 and 1653, a student of Tembrandt. Returning to Dordrecht in 1653 until 1673, when he abandoned the manner of Rembrandt to devote himself to interior scenes. He subsequently devoted himself to portraits which were very popular in Holland during the second half of the 17th century. After a trip to Antwerp, he came under the influence of Antoine van Dyck. He ended his career in Amsterdam where he returned in 1673.
