Prof. Alberto Cottino Critical Profile

The vase of flowers in examination performed with great technical skill, attention to detail and naturalistic analysis is counted in the tradition of still lifes of Roman flowers of the late seventeenth century. In particular, this pictorial season was dominated by the presence of very skilled foreigners in the representation of florists such as Franz Werner von Tamm, Christian berentz and Karen van Vogelaer. It is precisely to the latter that it is possible to attribute the execution of the work in question.
Karen van Vogelaer (1653-1695) was nicknamed Carlo de Fiori for his great skill in depicting them. He arrived in Rome at least in 1675, when he was registered in the company of Flemish painters "Bentveughel" and remained there until his death in 1695. The Roman period was marked by numerous commissions from the most renowned collectors, such as the Colonna.
Shortly after his death, in 1699 the Pallavicini acquired two of his works, which for critics were an important starting point for the reconstruction of his artistic identity, along with the other few certain works: the two canvases at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, one in the Canessa collection and others reported by Alberto Veca and Didier Bodart. Observing these and the canvas in analysis we note the main characters of the works of Vogelaer: the vertical orientation of the support, the large and lush bouquets of flowers placed in pots placed in an outdoor setting that gives, as in the case under consideration, on architectural elements and landscape views that, together with the palette of soft colors increase the decorative taste of the work. Here the colors are well calibrated, the most saturated red and white are combined with the pale pink, so as to give greater three-dimensionality to the representation. For the background dominate the colors of the earth and the cerulean sky.
Sometimes his compositions see the addition of animals such as rabbits or putti of Marattesca influence.
Carlo dei fiori, as already said, must have arrived in Rome around 20 years, passing here the rest of his life: therefore his paintings suffer from the Roman culture, The rich presence of his countrymen was certainly stimulating for him.
Little is known about the Vogelaer but note is the competition with the Tamm, born when the Maratta did not want the collaboration of Carlo die fiori for one of his Flora but preferred Tamm.
