large Louis XVI period mantel clock featuring biscuit porcelain and mercury-gilded chased bronze. Flanking the movement are a kneeling female figure holding a basket of flowers and a corresponding male figure. With arms raised, both figures gaze up at Cupid amidst the clouds, as if imploring the God of Love to unite them. This clock could be titled "Impossible Love" or "The Torment of Love." The oval base, featuring projecting sections with stop-fluted columns, is adorned with a gilt-bronze bas-relief depicting cherubs holding a scroll and a dove. It rests on five chased and gilt-bronze feet screwed into the supporting plate. It features its original, unmodified 8-day movement striking the hours and half-hours, a white enamel dial, gilt hands, and silk-thread suspension.

Condition report: The clock is in good overall condition, retaining its original movement and mercury gilding. The dial is free of cracks or damage. Note a small restoration to the biscuit porcelain on one arm and a tiny loss on a flower. There is some shrinkage of the biscuit porcelain at the base (a firing flaw common in 18th-century biscuit ware due to the manufacturing process).
