Creation Of Baba Takashi In Bizen Pottery

Artist: Baba Takashi
This very large dish created by the talented and young master potter from Bizen: Baba Takashi. We are quickly attracted by the wavy effect of part of the dish, a perfect contrast between the rigor of the material and its flexibility. It looks like a wave breaking but also the expression of the artist's freedom or his creative impulse which emerges from the waves in the middle of a classic exercise. In the hollow of the dish we can see traces of ashes and twigs deposited during its stay in the oven. The exterior surface is naturally enameled, with a pleasant touch. The partly calm and partly wild look gives this work a power evocative of nature. The dark color with reddish reflections recalls the works of the Momoyama period (1573-1600) when the Bizen kilns reached their peak.
