"Gaston Anglade : “the Departure Of The Farmer”"
Gaston Anglade (1854-1931): “The departure of the farmer's wife”, oil on canvas 39 x 55 cm mounted in a bronzed “Barbizon” style frame 52 x 70 cm. Signed and dated 1889, “in its juice”, dirt and very small holes at the top left. Far from the misty heather landscapes which made his reputation, this early work is close to Pissarro d'Eragny with which it is contemporary. His impressionist touch, suggesting rather than demonstrating, wonderfully describes this peasant woman leaving her farm, a basket on her arm, certainly to go to the market.
