African Tribal Art - Boli Bambara Fetish flag

Object description :

"African Tribal Art - Boli Bambara Fetish"
Ex-French collection

Named boli (pl. boliw) meaning buffalo, this fetish of variable size plays a central role in the ritual life of the Mandingo region in African art. There are pocket "Boliw", others are the property of chiefdoms, of initiatory societies such as the male initiation associations Kono and Komo, whose members progress through a process spread over several decades, and even to state levels. These objects are used as altars or are presented during dance performances. They are designed from revelations granted to the geniuses of the bush, transmitted to diviners, using active amalgams from nature and/or organic origin, called daliluw. These materials are arranged around an interior bamboo frame wrapped in white cotton linen, then covered with layers of mud and clay. Over time, sacrificial materials accumulate on the surface of these objects.
