Claude Bonin-Pissarro, born July 11, 1921 in Houilles and died July 21, 2021 in Montpellier, is a French painter and graphic designer. Grandson of the painter Camille Pissarro, he is the father of the French painter Frédéric Bonin-Pissarro (born in 1964) working in the United States. A resistance fighter, he ensured the protection of French museum collections during the Second World War, and organized a major art exhibition in Australia in the 1950s, the notable success of which introduced many painters from the School of Paris there. “When I see a tree, a bush, my eye does not see the exterior of the thing but in short sees beyond the bark of the tree, it sees the soul of the plant, the soul of nature. My painting has this claim to represent the soul of things and not the appearance" Claude Bonin-Pissarro Claude Bonin-Pissarro (born in 1921) welcomes us in his studio, in Galargues, in Hérault. He is the grandson of the Dean of Impressionism, Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). His mother was Jeanne known as Cocotte (1881-1948). Claude Bonin-Pissarro's workshop is made up of two rooms. In the first workshop where the interview will take place: there are the painter's writings, numerous books, his sketchbooks and drawings. This is where he paints and he will share with us his impressions of painting. His writings reflect deep thoughts, sketches taken from nature serve as the basis for his paintings; these “notes” are supports for an artistic memory. Nature is Claude Bonin-Pissarro's main source of inspiration, he feels the painting and his brush transposes the soul of things. In his paintings, he favors color over line and volume, it can be flat colored areas. Emotion guides him in the choice of his subjects. During the interview, the painter's words offer variations of his palette and his artistic sensitivity: “The eye sees, the painting feels and the brush transposes. (…) A canvas is the projection of the soul, of what we feel at the moment. » At 95 years old, Claude Bonin-Pissarro is sparkling with intelligence! Fatma Alilate
