"Max Agostini (1914-1997) Entrance To The Port Of Cassis"
Life, movement and colors for this fiery oil on canvas by one of the leaders of the contemporary Impressionists Max Agostini. The work in perfect condition is presented in a modern black American crate type frame which measures 45 cm by 68 cm and 38 cm by 61 cm for the canvas alone. It represents a small sailboat at the entrance to the port of Cassis seen from the famous rocks of Bestouan Beach where the artist was accustomed. In excellent condition, it is signed lower left.

MAX-AGOSTINI was born in Paris in 1914, of Corsican origin through his grandparents. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and discovered a real talent for Impressionism. Incorporated into the French Army for five years at the start of the Second World War, MAX-AGOSTINI was taken prisoner for three years. During the post-war period, he was noted for his quality as an excellent portrait painter and landscaper in Châteauroux, where he worked for several years. Later, he settled in Gargilesse in Berry and in Provence. Died in January 1997, he was still painting his most beautiful paintings a few days before his hospitalization. Recognized throughout the world as one of the greatest colorists of his time, numerous openings in Paris in his presence allowed his admirers to know the man as much as his painting. “Fields of lavender” or “poppies,” “Bright countryside of spring,” “Reflections of river water,” “Still lifes” and “Bouquets,” made him the leader of contemporary Impressionism. For twenty-five years, an exclusive contract has linked MAX-AGOSTINI to Janet GREENBERG, owner of the MARTIN-CAILLE MATIGNON Gallery, who has introduced and appreciated her works throughout the world. Place of permanent exhibition of his paintings in Paris, the MARTIN-CAILLE MATIGNON Gallery, 75 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Paris, 8th (opposite the LE BRISTOL hotel) welcomes collectors and admirers of the painter from more than seventy countries different. From September 22, 1999, and on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the MARTIN-CAILLE MATIGNON Gallery, Janet GREENBERG inaugurates the exhibition: "25 years with Impressionism - The Choice of a Gallerist" and presents on this occasion 26 works by MAX-AGOSTINI representative of the years 1974 to 1999. An art book, recently published by the MARTIN-CAILLE MATIGNON Gallery and written by Janet Greenberg "MAX-AGOSTINI (1914-1997) Retrospective - The Mystery of Creation" (Janet GREENBERG - EDITIONS GMCM SA, Paris 1998), bears witness to the life and work of this leader of the Contemporary Impressionists with more than 880 illustrations, including 797 in color.
