Paul Désiré TROUILLEBERT (1829-1900) Bouquet of violets and love note
Oil on canvas, signed lower right
Dimensions with frame: 25 x 19cm of the artwork: 22 x 16,5 cm
This artwork belongs to a particularly intimate and sought-after series in Trouillebert's body of work. Far from his misty landscapes inspired by Corot, these still lifes featuring violets were tokens of friendship or gifts offered by the artist to his close circle or patrons.
The bouquet, placed with feigned simplicity on a lime green entablature, is accompanied by a folded note, a recurring motif for the artist, who liked to slip his business card into the heart of his compositions.
Although famous for his views of the Loire, it is in these small formats that Trouillebert reveals his greatest sensitivity, capturing with Parisian elegance the language of flowers and the social etiquette of the 19th century.
Anecdote about Hortense Bégard: One of the most famous versions of his bouquet of violets (dated 1880) was given to Hortense Bégard, the wife of one of his pupils, Pierre Ucciani.
