Canivet To The Glory Of Saint Paul Late 18th Century
Delicate canivet showing in the center the "rapture of Saint Paul", period late 18th century - early 19th century. Light brown paper finely cut to reveal in a central medallion the rapture of Saint Paul, captioned in the lower part. The central scene created in ink and enhanced with watercolor is inspired by the famous painting by Nicolas Poussin, under the dove is written the word: science which refers to one of the seven gifts of the spirit according to prayer: “Sound mind, Give me the gift of Science, so that I know how to guide my life according to the principles of this faith.” Rich decoration surrounding the medallion on a background of starry crosspieces, two birds in the upper corners and very beautiful scrolls of fine cutouts, shells at the top and bottom in the Regency style. The set of classic compositions remains in good condition (small defect in the top right corner), rests on a black paper background under bubbled glass from the same period. Modern framing of a patinated silver wood stick decorated with a frieze of shells. Dimensions at sight: 24 cm x 19.2 cm. Delivery: €15 for mainland France.
