This Desk is Inlaid on All Sides with Butterfly Wings, and Rests on Four Arched Legs. Of German origin. Originally from Germany, Guillaume Kemp was based in Paris on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine when, in 1757, he married Marie-Fancoise Peridiez, daughter and sister of master cabinetmakers. He passed his master's degree in 1764 and then worked on rue de la Roquette until the Revolution. A skillful and careful artist, his works, essentially in the Transition and Louis XVI style, with classic and well-proportioned lines, are always of very good quality, with perfect finishes. Perhaps his Germanic side influenced him in the often too contrasting choices of different woods, but his mahogany furniture was excellent and his marquetry of regular geometric patterns was remarkably fine.
