Mahogany Secretary Desk, Louis XVI Period – Late 18th Century

This mahogany secretary desk, dating from the Louis XVI period, is crowned with a black Louverné marble top with a projecting edge, encircled by an openwork brass gallery that highlights the overall refinement and discreetly captures the light. The frieze opens to reveal a drawer with half-round brass moldings, fitted with its original working lock and drop handles. Just below, the framed drop-front, adorned with a recessed panel framed in brass, reveals its own perfectly functional period lock. The interior is a small theater of elegance: new fir-green leather, embossed with a central motif and a gilt vignette, provides a comfortable writing surface. Above, six drawers with brass knobs and a central shelf structure the space into two symmetrical niches, ideal for organizing correspondence and small precious objects. The lower section echoes the same refined spirit: a double door opens onto a shelf and an internal drawer, complete with a key and functional lock, offering discreet and generous storage. The fluted half-column uprights, terminating in tapered legs topped with a collar and fitted with brass sabots, anchor the piece firmly in the pure Louis XVI tradition: balance, verticality, and controlled simplicity. This late 18th-century secretary desk is a harmonious and authentic period piece, where every detail speaks to the craftsmanship of the workshops of the era. A piece that is both practical and highly decorative, ready to take its place in an interior where the beauty of lines and the quality of materials are appreciated.********Period: Late 18th century.
