Oil on copper
Period 1st half of the 17th century
Copper  22.5 x 31, frame 45 x 55
Excellent condition

This jewel of exceptional beauty, painted in oil on copper with extraordinary finesse, depicts the most fascinating scene in the Gospels, namely the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel in the presence of the Virgin to announce the Great Event of the incarnation of Christ, the son of God , in her womb.
The Divine Messenger holds the lily, symbol of purity, in his right hand and points with his left to the white dove of the Holy Spirit, who with a ray of light completes the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
It faithfully reproduces the famous masterpiece created around 1610 by Guido Reni, currently exhibited in the "Chapel of the Annunziata" in the Quirinale Palace in Rome.
The remarkable quality of this copper, painted with a light hand and first-rate pictorial technique, places it directly in the Bolognese workshop of the Great Master, who used to repeat the extraordinary inventions of the Emilian genius in a reduced size suitable for private needs. Reni's atelier boasted a large group of extremely gifted students, many of whom also experienced great personal success, constantly committed to replicating their Master's most successful compositions.
The sacred images that came out of this thriving and renowned workshop were always of the highest level, and should not be confused with the countless copies of the most varied Renian depictions, produced by the ranks of minor authors who imitated his elegant and highly communicative style.

The back of the copper plate bears an ancient inscription which attributes it to Guido Reni.

The conditions of the painting are truly excellent and no restorations or repaintings are noticeable.
A beautiful golden frame with rich palmette decoration completes the work perfectly.
