Pretty Small Mortier Du Puy, Louis XIII Period, Bronze With Dark Patina
Artist: Fondeurs Du Puy
Small bronze mortar, flared shape, resting on a small round foot, on which stand 4 buttresses in shape of caryatids, between which appear in relief a mask of Diana with a pearl necklace and a crescent on head, surrounded by foliage, and 5 florets. The strong upper edge does not have any moldings, this is quite rare.
Information taken from the volume “French mortars from the 15th to the 18th century”, the caryatids are specific to the master founders of Puy, “IC.IF group” datable from 1640/1680.
