They are Monogrammed AC and Signed by the Famous Sculptor Auguste Nicolas Cain (1821-1894) Auguste Caïn (1821-1894) is a French animal sculptor. The son of a butcher, he worked for several years as an apprentice for his father. He first studied sculpture in the workshop of Alexandre Guionnet, wood sculptor, then with the famous sculptor François Rude. He regularly visits the Jardin des Plantes in Paris where he studies the attitudes of wild animals firsthand. From 1846, he participated assiduously in the Paris Salon. He joined forces with the animal sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne, whose daughter he married in 1852 and whose influence he was strongly influenced by. He then worked in his father-in-law's foundry which produced many of his sculptures in bronze. Specializing in small animal sculpture, he likes to show the details representing wild animals in their natural environment. From 1868, Caïn received orders from the State for monumental works in bronze, today kept at the Jardin des Tuileries, at the Jardin du Luxembourg, at the Château de Chantilly... An eminent animal sculptor, he was nicknamed in 1879 “the statuary of lions and tigers”. After his death, the foundry was closed and the molds sold to Ferdinand Barbedienne who continued to make prints. (19th century sculptors) Work from the 19th century.
