France Louis XVI period.

French painter (Paris 1753 – id. 1809). Henri-Pierre Danloux (1753-1809) was a student of Lépicié (1780) and Vien, with whom he met David, then went to the French Academy in Rome (1775-1780), then directed by Vien. On his way back to France, he stopped in Lyon, where he performed genre scenes. During the Revolution, he took refuge in London (1791-1800), continuing to paint portraits (Comte d'Artois, Versailles) and some historical paintings (Supplice of a vestal, 1800, exhibited at the Salon of 1802, Louvre ). His art then became more soberly elegant under the influence of Romney (M. Delaval, Louvre; A. Lenoir, Versailles). Back in Paris, Danloux executed historical subjects (Henri IV and Sully, Pau museum) and continued his series of portraits of theater people and artists (Delille and his wife, 1802, Versailles). Following Aved, he willingly sticks to a composition without pomp: if his Comtesse de Cluzel (1787, Chartres museum) recalls the delicate compositions of Mme Vigée-Lebrun, he often returns to more simplicity, with a sensitivity that Prud'hon or Gérard (Jean-François de La Marche, 1793, Louvre) will illustrate more precisely. Dictionary of painting, Larousse.
