The black panther of Jouve was designed by the great animal painter in 1927; Today it remains one of his greatest successes, and one of his best-known images. Our proof is part of a print made using the Jacomet process, a revolutionary and expensive process combining collotype and the use of stencils. The number of prints is unknown, but the majority have now disappeared. In fact, the black panther was not intended to be commercialized but to be displayed to promote the artist. One of these boards is now kept at the Musée des Années 30 in Boulogne-Billancourt. Our work was designed in 1927, in the midst of the art deco period, and follows Jouve's work for the numerous pavilions of the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts which earned him his gold medal. Our work is reminiscent of his recent illustrative works: The Fables of La Fontaine, the Terrestrial Paradise of Colette, the Barbarian Poems of Leconte de Lisle, and especially The Hunt of Kaa by Rudyard Kipling and The Pilgrim of Angkor by Pierre Loti. Bibliography: F. Marcilhac, Paul Jouve, animal sculptor painter, les éditions de l'amateur, Paris, 2005, p. 365. Framed / The dimensions given are those of the image (of the bowl)
