Large gilt bronze sculpture of Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha who lived in India in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The Buddha is depicted in the lotus position, hands performing the gesture of Bhumisparsha. The Buddha is depicted in the lotus position, his hands performing the gesture of Bhumisparsha, or calling the earth to witness. The Buddha is seated on an unusual base decorated with bas-reliefs depicting lion masks and mysterious figures, somewhat reminiscent of bas-reliefs from the Lopburi period (11th - 13th century), when parts of Thailand were under the domination of the Khmer Kingdom.
