Henry De Waroquier, Oedipus, Original Plaster (1948)
HENRY DE WAROQUIER (Paris 1881-1970)
Oedipus, original plaster
1948
H. 30 cm
Signed, dated, and annoted on the underneath
Henri de Waroquier was an important mid twentieth century painter and sculptor who had an obsession with Oedipus, the Greek tragic hero, who killed his father and married his mother, and was the subject of Sophocles’ play ‘Oedipus Rex’. This obsession on the part of De Waroquier was perhaps because the artist felt that Oedipus embodied the angst and the horror of the 1930s and 1940s. De Waroquier made many versions of Oedipus in sculpture, paintings, and prints, and this terrifying plaster head is the original model for a bronze cast by Claude Valsuani in 1948. The bronze was acquired by the State and entered the collection of the Musée d’Orsay, and since 1979 it has been on loan to the Angers Museum. This remarkable work is therefore the original of an important museum piece.
