Charles Pierre-Humbert (1920 Le Locle - 1992 Nîmes) "Still life with pomegranates" HST signed lower right Dimensions: 90cms x 116cms Born in Switzerland in Le Locle on September 10, 1920, Charles Pierre-Humbert began training as an engraver at the Art School of La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1936. From 1940 to 1946, he continued his education in Geneva, with Karl-Georg Hemmerich. Pierre-Humbert moved to Paris in 1946, where he studied for a few months at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He worked briefly in the studios of Othon Friesz and Ossip Zadkine. In 1950, he discovered the work of Nicolas de Staël, during his exhibition at the Galerie Dubourg. During the following decade, marked by the work of Staël, Pierre-Humbert produced abstract paintings. His works are exhibited in various Parisian Salons: Surindépendants, Réalités Nouvelles, Comparaisons, Mai. In these, the major concerns of the artist are already reflected, namely the creation of light, the construction of space and the treatment of color. From the 1960s, Pierre-Humbert — in painting, drawing, mosaic and stained glass — turned to the figurative. However, he remained "at the crossroads of abstraction and the lyricism of nature" throughout his career. Pierre-Humbert exhibited for the first time in Switzerland at the Numaga Gallery in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1961. His personal and collective exhibitions followed one another mainly in Paris and Switzerland, but also in the rest of Europe and, in a few occasions, in overseas countries. Charles Pierre-Humbert died on October 22, 1992 in Nîmes.
