"Pierre Labrouche (1876-1956) Attributed To" St-palais, Basque Country" , Oil On Canvas 73x60"
Attributed to Pierre LABROUCHE (Bayonne 1876 – Bayonne 1956) “Presumed view of the surroundings of Saint-Palais” Oil on canvas unsigned L: 73 cm x H: 60 cm Biography of the artist: Pierre Labrouche is part of the group of Nine, friendly group of artists who contributed to developing a Basque regionalist painting on the north side at the beginning of the 20th century. Pierre Labrouche's painting is easily identifiable by its bright colors and precise pointillism. Along with Floutier and Masson, he is the artist who is most resolutely in an impressionist style with an unparalleled technique. Born in Bayonne, he trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris before settling in Ciboure. He often left the Basque Country to visit his relatives in Morocco, to explore Andalusia, or to get lost in Venice, and from all his travels, he brought back numerous landscapes. The number of his Basque paintings is not immense, because if his life was dedicated to painting, he did not paint for a living. In 1948, he was appointed curator of the Bonnat museum in Bayonne, a position he held until his death in 1956. Attribution of the painting to Pierre Labrouche: The style of this painting is similar to that reproduced in “A Century of Basque Painting” by Alexandre Hurel and Michel de Jaureguiberry (2006 edition) representing the town of Mundaka in the Spanish Basque Country.
