Victor Uytterschaut (Brussels, 1847 - Boulogne-sur-mer, 1917)
Painter, pastellist and first watercolourist of landscapes, seascapes and urban views. At a very young age, he entered a metal ornaments manufacturer in Brussels as an apprentice goldsmith. From 1859 to 1862, he took the course in industrial design at the Brussels Academy and, from 1864 to 1867, the course in landscape from nature. The academic year 1864-1865, he received the first prize for his work at the end of the year. A fan of the outdoors, he produced his first watercolors around 1867 near Spa. The same year, he exhibited at the Antwerp Salon and, in 1869, at that of Ghent. From 1870, he frequently stayed in Anseremme, Ghent and Antwerp to paint from nature.
In 1878, he traveled to Holland and England from where he brought back many studies and sketches. He paints with a great sense of observation, a lot of finesse and charming views of dunes, marshes, small localities and especially undergrowth. Founding member of "La Chrysalide", he participates in almost all their events.
Along with Henri Staquet, he is one of the most loyal members of "The Royal Belgian Society of Watercolourists". Around 1880, he often painted on the Belgian coast and in particular in La Panne and Nieuport.
In 1920, the artistic and literary circle of Brussels devoted a major retrospective to him.
