An oblong covered vegetable dish in solid silver 950 and rosewood, Art Déco, Paris, circa 1930. Plain body on a pedestal base, flanked by two flat stepped handles with the final step in rosewood. Cover with a slight doucine profile, gently curved at the four corners, surmounted by a silver and rosewood finial. Length 29 cm · width 19 cm · height 14.5 cm · weight 1,781 g. Hallmarks: Minerva 1st title (silver 950) · Ravinet d'Enfert maker's mark.
The form — plain unornamented body, stepped handles of rigorous geometry, contrast between polished silver and dark rosewood — is the most accomplished expression of the Art Déco vocabulary of the French table in the 1920s–1930s: calculated sobriety, discreet monumentality, where the material speaks alone. The weight of 1,781 g for a table service piece attests to the quality of the solid silver 950 used by the house — the highest title in French silversmithing, surpassing even sterling silver.
The Maison Ravinet d'Enfert, founded in 1845 by E. Tonnelier and acquired in 1882 by Louis Ravinet (1854–1925), took its definitive name in 1891 upon the association of Charles d'Enfert (1865–1960). Established at the Hôtel de Caumartin, 83 rue du Temple in the heart of the Marais, the house specialised in solid silver cutlery and silverware. It participated in major international exhibitions and received high distinctions: gold medal in Lyon (1894), gold medal at the Brussels Universal Exhibition (1897), presence at the Exhibitions of 1900, 1925 and 1937. During the first half of the 20th century, Georges Latouche and Adolphe Armand Truffier were the authors of many of the house's Art Déco models. In 1923, André Ravinet (1889–1971) and Jacques d'Enfert (1900–1982) took over management — it is under their direction that this vegetable dish was produced. Pieces from the house are held in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Bordeaux.
