Mafresh* open Iranian shahsavan wool, cotton warp, circa 1960. Very good condition.

Shahsavan consisting in the central part made in soumak, of a pattern with bands of different widths taking up göls (flowers) and zoomorphs. Beautiful harmony of colors: burgundy red, turmeric, black. On either side, irregular kilims complete this beautiful piece.
* The mafresh, also called farmash, is a large bag used when moving the group, which had the function of a trunk. It was used to store clothes, blankets (djajims) but also crockery and kitchen utensils. In anticipation of her wedding, the shahsavan girl made a pair of mafreshs. One for clothes, the other for blankets, etc.
The territory of the shahsavans lies south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnicities, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629). Shahsavan means "those who love the Shah".
