"Kilim Soumak Shahsavan Iran 150 X 97 Cm"
Mafresh reconstituted shahsavan Iranian wool, cotton warp, 1950. Very good condition.Beautiful harmony of colors for this shahsavan consisting, in the central part made in soumak, of six geometric patterns including zoomorphs. In the small borders the 'S' motif is widely represented. Originally, this motif was an interpretation of a two-headed dragon that could be observed on ancient Persian, Chinese and Celtic bronzes. Striped kilims harmonize with the central part.
The mafresh, also called farmash, is a large bag used when moving the group, which had the function of a trunk. It was used to store clothes, blankets (djajims) but also crockery and kitchen utensils. In anticipation of her wedding, the shahsavan girl made a pair of mafreshs. One for clothes, the other for blankets, etc.
The territory of the shahsavans lies south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnicities, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629). Shahsavan means "those who love the Shah"
