It is quite natural for painters to direct their gaze towards the coast, the economic and social heart of a country which has dearly acquired its freedom and is proud of its economic success. The Dutch, in the long war of liberation which opposed them to the kingdom of Spain, also won several naval victories which are exalted in the painting and contribute greatly to the dissemination of the navies. Van de Velde manifests great qualities of observation which apply as much to the landscape as to the scenes of life described in his paintings and to the representations he draws of ships. Willem van de Velde, known as the Younger, born in December 1633 in Leiden in the United Provinces and died on April 6, 1707 in London, was a marine painter from the golden age of Dutch painting, particularly known for his paintings representing the Navy of the Republic of the United Provinces during the Dutch Golden Age.
