Pair Of Vases « Grand Tour » XIXth

Chiseled bronze, Morello cherry marble.

Here is a pair of vases each consisting of a domed belly on a pedestal. They have a high pair of handles surmounted by a kind of conical nail and the edge of the collar is also surmounted by four pieces in the form of cleats.
Mythological scenes are finely and clearly chiselled in hollow, we see characters on chariots carrying stylized flowers (kings?) preceded by carriers of vases. A large palmette is carved under each handle. These vases are set on a base with an inverted conical top and decorated with antique stylizations (volutes and palmettes) carried by three lion trapezophorums.
A beautiful indented and molded cherry marble plinth supports the whole. These large vases reproduce situlae called Lébès Gamikos Greeks. They were wedding vases, they were used for the ritual sprinkling of the bride. Moreover, they sometimes had a lid topped with a small cup, corresponding to their use and were then made of ceramic decorated with mythological scenes. Their particular shape inspired fans of the Tour du Chevalier and these Lébès Gamikos were reproduced in bronze and placed on an Athenian base. Once again, these objects from the Grand Tour bear witness to the desire of aesthetes making their humanities to "appropriate" the particularities and poetic beauty of the Ancient world.

Excellent condition, two chips  in  marble and micro chips of use, all is practically invisible. Beautiful shiny patina of old bronze.
