To survive, he works in various trades, in the grocery store in Batignolles, in the charcuterie run by his wife in Asnières. Mobilized in 1939 in La Roche-sur-Yon as a lieutenant of a regiment of Tunisian Tirailleurs, his formation, surrounded, fell back on the forest of Mormal then was taken prisoner in Haubourdin. He was taken into captivity in an "oflag" located about forty kilometers from Dresden. Released but ill, Caillaud resumed painting in 1946 and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Libérés. In 1949 he participated in the exhibition of "Art brut" by Dubuffet and Jean Paulhan invited him to the Pavillon de Gallimard. From 1950 he made his first personal exhibitions in Parisian galleries. A first retrospective exhibition of Caillaud's painting was organized in 1964 in Paris at the Beno d'Incelli gallery, others were presented in 1971 at the cultural centers of Bourges and La Rochelle as well as at the museums of Nantes and Saint Etienne. In 1974 and 1975 his paintings were exhibited in Germany, in Stuttgart, Mainz, Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne. Two new retrospectives were produced in 1976 at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and in 1978 at the Musée Sainte-Croix in Poitiers. He died on September 26, 1990 in Jaunay-Marigny1.
