Stamped "j. Birckle" - Commode In Floral Marquetry - Louis XV Period

Superb chest of drawers with an eventful shape decorated with floral marquetry, on the front and on the sides.
This decor is made up of flowering branches in hornbeam and sycamore, on a herringbone rosewood background, in polylobed frames of boxwood fillets and amaranth backdrop.
The curved facade opens with four drawers separated by visible crosspieces and arranged in three rows.
The pinched uprights are underlined by a leafy and eventful fall in gilded bronze.
Beautiful ornamentation of finely chiseled and gilded bronzes.
The floor is covered with a royal red marble.
Functional locks and keys.
The frame is in oak - Front of softwood drawers - sides and bottoms in oak.
Very good quality cabinetry - This chest of drawers was definitely an order from an important customer.

Jacques BIRCKLE (1734 - 1803)
He obtained his Masters on July 30, 1764.
He was one of the suppliers of the Garde Meuble under Louis XVI.
Between 1785 and 1789. Marie-Antoinette placed him orders at the Château de Saint-Cloud, Madame Elizabeth in Montreuil, the Duke of Orleans or the Princess of Lamballe.
In view of his production, dense, varied, of good quality, easily adapted to the evolution of styles,
BIRCKLE presents himself as a conscientious cabinetmaker, who does not seek luxury and preciousness but much more the decorative effect.
He also excels there thanks to his talent as a marketer.
In the majority of his furniture, practically devoid of bronzes, a predominance of marquetry in bright and contrasting tones, drawn with simplicity, without superfluous details, prevails. Made of light stained woods, they most often stand out against a dark veneer background.
Their effect is further enhanced by the chosen themes such as vases of flowers, urns, draperies, ribbons, musical trophies, various attributes and even landscapes of scenes in the antique, framed by Greek nets. On his death, his workshop was taken over by his son, who kept it until 1825.
