Pair Of Louis XVI Sconces By Gouthière Or Thomire, Late 18th Century

A large pair of gilt bronze sconces of the late Louis XVI period. Decorated with goat heads, eagles holding in their beaks a garland of flowers, masks and oak leaves and acanthus leaves.
Jean-Louis Prieur (1732-1795), made the drawing of this model around 1780 (kept in the library of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris).
Outstanding quality of carving and gilding. Two numbers of inventories "erased".

The Palace of Fontainebleau keeps an identical pair arrived from the Imperial Furniture stores in 1806, we have no precise information on their date of entry to the Garde Meuble nor the information about or of the supplier. The Cleveland Museum of Art also keeps an identical pair of sconces.
These sconces are attributed to Pierre Gouthière, however they could be made by Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
Condition Report: Very good state of conservation. Screws of origin - 6 posterior screws - wear to the gilding of the bobeches. Traces of an old restoration.
