Oil on canvas Presented in a superb Louis XIII period frame in gilded wood, carved with laurel packages and inverted profile. Total dimensions: 61.5 x 53 cm Nicolas Tournier is a French painter born in Montbéliard in 1590 and died in Toulouse in 1639. He follows the trade of his father, André Tournier, "Protestant painter of Besançon" He belongs to the Caravaggesque movement French. These painters, including Valentin de Boulogne, Nicolas Régnier and Georges de La Tour are also sometimes called "painters of reality" whose exhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie in 1934 allowed their rediscoveries. He was probably a pupil of Valentin de Boulogne. Nicolas Tournier has two main periods, one in Rome and the second in Toulouse where he arrives in 1632. Tournier paints religious subjects and, like all Caravaggesques, pictures where guard corps, happy companies and concerts are staged. Work of workshop, our portrait executed in close-up, emphasizes the face of this young man brightly lit by chiaroscuro light. He wears a beret with a feather held by a brooch and the curls of his long hairstyle stand out against a dark background. His mouth highlighted by a thin mustache is slightly ajar and his chin resting on the white collar introduces a luminous touch. Good condition. Sold with invoice & certificate
