Frédéric Samuel Cordey painted at the same time as the Impressionists. He showed four paintings with the group for the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1877.
Pupil of Isodor Pils and Gustave Boulanger at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, he was part of the group (with Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley) which rebelled against academic teaching in order to follow the path of the Impressionism.

The artist participated in the Salon d'Automne in 1903. He exhibited only rarely and art critics are praising him. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Choiseul Gallery in Paris in 1913. His fortune allowed him to work according to his own aspirations without depending on criticism and the help of merchants.

Appreciated by Gustave Caillebotte and particularly related to Auguste Renoir, he is painted in several paintings by the artist, including the "Bal du moulin de la galette". Attentive landscape painter, he liked to portray the surrounding nature. If the campaign Auxerre is one of the favorite places of the painter, he stayed not far from Camille Pissarro in Neuville-sur-Oise and Éragny-sur-Oise.

For this painting, the artist depicted a country landscape. The encounter between man and nature illustrates the calm and the tranquility of an afternoon in the countryside. The scene is picturesque par excellence. The church of Auvers-sur-Oise, represented in the background, was made famous by Van Gogh's eponymous painting, two years earlier than Cordey's. In this painting of 1892, the painter stood out from Renoir's Impressionism. Landscaper of the magnificent free school of landscape of the nineteenth century, he made the color vibrate by the juxtaposition of small and dynamic brushstrokes.
